INTRODUCTION
For any developing country like India accurate and reliable information on natural resources is the
main stay of planning. Geo-Spatial technology encompasses the Geographic information system (GIS),
Satellite Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry, GPS, field surveys, maps and a variety of documents. GIS is
a software based system with unique capability of storing and analyzing huge spatial data derived from
a variety of sources. Mapping of mineral potential using GIS is conducted to delineate areas with
different probabilities of hosting certain types of mineralization. Remote sensing is now gaining
momentum to characterize the chemical or mineralogical composition of the ground surface through its
hyper-spectral imaging sensors that can identify and also map minerals. This techniques are also used
in monitoring mining pollution.
Global positioning system (GPS) is a satellite based technology operated by Department of Defense, USA.
GPS has direct contribution in surface mines and indirect contribution to underground mines.
GPS helps in effective navigation of all operations in mines, which in-turn increases the efficiency,
productivity, increased profitability and safety in mines.
The above technologies are finding increasing use in mining for Mapping of minerals and monitoring
day-to-day operations like shifting over-burdens, subsidence and in mine planning.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of the programme is to impart thorough understanding of applications of the GIS and
GPS in mining which enables to take advantage of its effectiveness in mining operations.
CONTENTS
The topics that would be deliberated during the programme are:
- Overview on GIS and GPS and its applications in mining
