INTRODUCTION
With the increased environmental awareness and pollution concerns, safe disposal of industrial effluents has become
a mandate, subject to the increasingly stringent discharge regulations. Industries generate huge amounts of
wastewater (effluent) with fluctuating inlet characteristics of flow and pollutant load. The treatment of effluent
is a complex phenomenon with varied chemical/biological process, units & equipment. The selection of ETP process
depends on technology application, characteristics of the effluent, removal of specific pollutants, energy
consumption, cost of the plant and end use of treated effluent either for disposal or reuse & recycle purpose.
Sustainable performance of ETPs is measured by good operation and maintenance (O&M) practices. Treatment plant
units do require good maintenance like production units. Beyond preventive and corrective maintenance, O&M of
ETPs is system oriented management with skilled manpower, chemicals used for treatment, laboratory facilities etc.,.
Another challenge before the industry is optimal management of water and wastewater by conserving water
consumption through recycle & reuse options. Industries will sustain by making use of treated effluent for
various secondary applications.
With the above issues, ESCI is proposing to organize a 4-day course on “Industrial Wastewater Treatment - Design,
O&M with Reuse and Recycle Options”.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this programme is to facilitate effective learning on design principles of treatment process,
advanced methods of treatment for reuse and recycle purpose and O&M practices of ETPs.
PROGRAMME OUTLINE
The course will cover the following topics:
- Wastewater management in Industry - an overview
- Wastewater Characteristics - Pollution Load
- Principles and Design Concepts of Pre & Primary Treatment
- Chemicals used in Treatment
- Principles and Design Concepts of Biological Treatment
- Aerobic Treatment process
- Anaerobic Treatment Process
- Alternative Biological Treatment Methods
- Advanced Treatment technologies for reuse and recycle purpose
- Micro filtration
- Ultra filtration
- Reverse Osmosis
- Nanofiltration
- Membrane Bio Reactors (MBRs)) etc.,
- Sludge Handling & Disposal Techniques
- Disinfection practices (Chlorination, UV radiation, Electro chlorination, ozonation,
Silver ionization etc.,)
- Automation - Process Control Systems and Instrumentation
- Optimization of Effluent Treatment Plants
- Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) facilities - a Techno-economic feasible option
- Chemical Analysis & Laboratory facilities
- Environmental Legislation and regulatory compliance
- Operation and Maintenance of Treatment Plants
- Field Visit to Effluent Treatment Plants in and around Hyderabad
PROGRAMME METHODOLOGY
Methodology includes class room lectures with audio visuals, group discussions, case studies, sharing of experiences,
technical field visits etc,. More emphasis will be on participatory style of learning.
OUTCOME: After attending this course participant will be able to
- State the characteristics of wastewater and quantify the pollution load.
- Select treatment processes and design the system
- Work on latest technologies of wastewater treatment
- Implement good O&M practices.
