Programme on
Power System Switchgear, Protection & Metering

Dates : 11 - 22 Feb 2008

Venue : ESCI Campus, Gachi Bowli, Hyderabad

INTRODUCTION & OBJECTIVES

As the power systems are growing in size and complexity, the need for reliable and faster control is also assuming importance.  A perfect power system requires a reliable switchgear and protection system to safeguard the equipment and human lives during short circuit conditions and also appropriate metering needed for effective control of the system.

The High-speed operations and reliability of switchgear is a critical factor involving innovative choices of interruption media and the correct selection of the type of circuit breakers, Dynamic characteristics, remote monitoring, GIS system, contactors, short-circuit performance and updating of standards all need continuous study through modeling and evaluation packages. The design and construction of the switchgear sub systems is of typical interest to practicing engineers, bulk-load customers, manufacturers and those working in grid operations.

Power system protection and control technologies have come a long way since the days of Electro-mechanical and static relay systems to the current state-of-art micro-processor based relaying units.  With the development of regional grids and inter-regional ties, paving the way to ultimately establishing a national grid in India, considerable attention needs to be given to the coordinated protection of power systems through pragmatic control schemes.  Line protection, Bus protection and Equipment protection comprise vital issues in ensuring the reliability of system operation.

Metering with special focus on whole current meter, C.T. Metering & H.T. Metering with tamper proof arrangement, calculation of Multiplication factors and prepaid metering has been exclusively covered in this course specially designed with all prominent aspects of electrical engineering for a period of 2 weeks.

PROGRAMME METHODOLOGY

The programme will be conducted in an interactive environment providing greater scope for discussions. Emphasis will be on a highly participative style of learning. The faculty will act as provocateurs and resource persons and demonstrate application oriented studies rather than as teachers. The participants are expected to play a very active role not only as learners and facilitators but also as experts and practitioners in their own right.
