INTRODUCTION
While mobility roads meet the fast movements of people and goods for long leads, rural roads
provide accessibility and connectivity to the people in rural areas have a significant impact
in accelerating the nation’s socio economic development. Rural roads have been neglected until
the initiation of Pradhan Mantri Grameena Sadakh Yojana (PMGSY). The task of developing rural
roads has gained importance after the launch of Pradhan Mantri Grameena Sadakh Yojana (PMGSY).
Referring to PMGSY, Prime Minister hoped that it would subserve the overall connectivity objective.
Rural roads, primarily provide last mile connectivity, bring multifaceted benefits to the hitherto
deprived rural areas by affecting the social and economic life patterns stimulating not only the
rural segment but the entire nation’s economy. Examples include better connectivity to work places,
reducing migrations and increasing rural employment, lower prices for economic commodities,
improvement in the climate for setting up industries, higher levels of social interaction,
increase in the attendance of school/colleges etc.,
The avowed objective can be achieved if only proper design procedures are adopted, proper selection
of materials construction practices are adapted. Quality control and proper maintenance procedures
that follow could result in better functioning of rural roads. This four day training programme is
formulated to fulfill the needs of the agencies, who are associated with formulating and developing
the rural roads.
OBJECTIVES
- To provide background information on rural road design methods.
- To provide necessary information on material characterisation.
- To equip engineers with the latest techniques in the construction methods.
- To drive home the importance of QA/QC practices in rural road constructions.
- To give an exposure to various distresses and remedial measures.

PROGRAMME METHODOLOGY
This programme will be conducted in an interactive environment providing ample scope for discussions.
Emphasis will be given in the direction of providing practical solutions judiciously to suit our conditions.
Participants will be given reading material on all the topics covered during the training process.
TARGET PARTICIPANTS
This programme is planned especially for all the agencies involved in the design and construction
of rural roads under PMGSY and other similar related activities. Also engineers from Rural Engineering
and PWD’s working on rural road projects will be benefited from this programme. Faculty members from
technical institutes / Universities, dealing in the areas of Highways & Transportation will also get
an exposure to the latest developments with this training programme and it will assist them in reorienting
their curriculum to suit the field requirements. Students who are pursuing their Masters programme in
the field of Highway/Transportation/Geo-Technical Engineering can utilize this opportunity to get an
insight into the latest design techniques and their practical applications in the field.
